Christmas Tree Safety

  • If you are purchasing an artificial tree, look for the “Fire-Resistant “label.
  • If you are purchasing a live tree, check for freshness.  A fresh tree is green, and the needles are hard to pull from the branches.  The needles should bend in between your fingers and not break.
  • When setting up your tree at home, make sure it is placed away from fireplaces, radiators or any other portable heat source.  Place the tree out of traffic areas and not block any doorways.
  • Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood.  This will help the tree absorb the water better and will keep your tree alive and well a lot longer.  This will also help prevent your tree from becoming a potential fire hazard.
  • Be sure to monitor your tree stand and keep it filled with water.  The heat from your home will dry out live trees rapidly.
  • Make sure that your tree base is steady so it will not tip over easily.
