To drain exterior faucets, you can:
- Turn off the water supply: Locate the shut-off valve for the exterior faucets and turn it off. This valve may be located near the water heater, on the outside of the house, under the sink, or behind the toilet.
- Disconnect the hose: Unplug any hoses connected to the faucets.
- Open the spigot: Go outside and open the faucet to allow any remaining water to drain out.
- Catch drips: Place a bucket or rag under the spigot to catch any remaining water.
- Let it drain: Allow the water to drain completely, which may take several minutes.
- Leave it open: Leave the spigot open for a bit longer to ensure all water has drained out.
- Place caps: Put insulation caps on the hose bibs.
Draining your exterior faucets helps prevent pipes from freezing, expanding, and bursting during the winter.
