Serving the Twin Cities Metro and surrounding area — including Wisconsin

Fire Prevention Week is October 6th – 12th. Fire Safety Tips to consider:

  • Smoke alarms

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including outside of sleeping areas. Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of everyone in your family, including those with disabilities.

  • Electrical safety

Check electrical wiring for frayed or exposed wires, and replace any that are damaged. Don’t overload outlets or extension cords, and keep wiring away from rugs and furniture.

  • Cooking safety

Keep flammable materials away from the stove, and never leave cooking unattended. Make sure your stove and small appliances are off before going to bed.

  • Space heaters

Keep space heaters on a level, nonflammable surface, like ceramic tile, and at least three feet away from flammable materials. Never leave portable heaters unattended, and turn them off when you leave the room.

  • Candles

Use flameless candles, or if you use candles with a flame, extinguish them before leaving a room. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.

  • Fire escape plan

Plan how you would escape from a fire, and make sure your house number is visible from the street.

  • Burns

If you get burned, run cool water over the burn for 10 to 15 minutes. Don’t apply ice, and don’t put butter or grease on the burn. If the burn blisters or is charred, see a doctor immediately.
